Maintenance Enforcement Program
Why do I have to fill out a Statement of Finances?Section 24 of the Maintenance Enforcement Act gives MEP the legal right to request that a debtor in default complete a sworn Statement of Finances. A debtor who does not fill out a Statement of Finances when requested or who knowingly gives false information on a Statement of Finances can be subject to a fine of not more than $2,000 or a term of imprisonment of not more than three months, or both. A person swearing a false Statement of Finances can also be charged with perjury under the Criminal Code. MEP uses the Statement of Finances to assess the debtor's circumstances to develop reasonable payment arrangements with the debtor. Collection action will not be removed unless the debtor has paid all arrears or has submitted a sworn Statement of Finances.
