Alberta Solicitor General and Minister of Public Security role and responsibilities

The Alberta Solicitor General and Minister of Public Security is responsible for ensuring safe communities through policing and crime prevention, victims' services and corrections.

The Police Act, the Corrections Act, and the Victims of Crime Act establish the roles and responsibilites of the Solicitor General and Public Security in legislation.

The Solicitor General and Minister of Public Security ensures safe communities in Alberta through adequate and effective levels of policing and the promotion of crime prevention activities. The Minister is responsible for ensuring victims of crime are treated with dignity and respect and that they receive information and assistance during the police investigation and any criminal court proceedings that may result. Alberta Solicitor General and Public Security maintains effective and efficient correctional programs while assisting offenders to return to the community better able to positively contribute to society.

The Criminal Injuries Review Board, Law Enforcement Review Board and the Victims of Crime Service Agencies report directly to the provincial Solicitor General and Public Security.
